Sweet Passive Tennessee Dream

The home site is in rural Tennessee on the ridge of an old family farm. The design stemmed from the desire to accentuate the feeling of soaring above the valley below, complement the contours of the landscape, and provide access to the remarkable views. The design draws on the vernacular agricultural architecture of the area including dog-trot farm houses and cantilevered barns. The house is 2500 sf, slab-on-grade with radiant floors,  solar photovoltaic and thermal panels. It is oriented to benefit from ample solar exposure for passive heating with appropriate overhangs to protect from over heating in the summer months. Lumber milled from trees on the site, frame walls insulated with cellulose and the north wall is strawbale, and a green roof caps the part of the project.
