once upon a dutch colonial…

November 3, 2010

Finding the right-fit house can be challenging especially after my lifelong journey from Tirane (Albania) to Bolzano (Italy) and ultimately Baltimore.  This small 1930’s yellow stucco Dutch Colonial Revival with its cedar shingled dormers and original wood windows came to be the answer to a three-year long quest.  Inspired by the traditional architectural materials of my mediterranean roots where brick and stucco are the norms, as well as the attraction of the mountainous south-tyrolean types of high-pitch wood shingled houses, my husband and I would settle for nothing less.

With our architecture backgrounds, we are planning the renovations in a methodical, sustainable and historic preservation manner.  This because living in a healthy, well preserved and efficiency-retrofitted historic house is our goal.  We also want our two little boys to grow up appreciating the old character of the house as well as benefit from the high-efficiency and sustainable solutions. Ultimately, because the design and preservation choices we make today shape tomorrow’s neighborhoods + cities.
